Patch test. Always.

The honest bit

What it is, and
who it's for.

Straight talk before we switch anything on. If your hair or skin type won't respond well, we'll say so - and point you somewhere better.

What it is

Precise pulses of laser light are absorbed by the pigment in each hair, heating the follicle so it produces less hair over time. It works best on dark hair against lighter skin, and it takes a course to catch every follicle.

Every course starts with a consultation and a patch test to check how your skin responds.

Good for you if
  • You're tired of constant shaving, waxing or plucking
  • You have dark hair you'd like reduced long-term
  • Ingrown hairs or razor irritation get you down
  • You're happy to commit to a course spaced over months
Not for you if
  • You're pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Your hair is very fair, red, grey or white - it won't absorb the light
  • You have a fresh tan or recent sun exposure on the area
  • You take certain photosensitising medication - we'll check first

Your visit

Zap, cool,
repeat.

Each session takes anywhere from 10 minutes for a small area to around 45 for a larger one - and you'll come back for several, spaced weeks apart.

A practitioner preparing a laser hair removal session at Wilbury Clinic
  1. We chat and patch test first

We assess your hair and skin type, talk through what's realistic for your area, and carry out a patch test 24-48 hours before your first full session.

  2. The treatment

You'll arrive freshly shaved. We glide the applicator over the area in pulses, with cooling to protect the skin. Most people describe each pulse as a quick warm flick.

  3. How it feels after

Expect some warmth, redness and a slight bumpiness around the follicles - a bit like mild sunburn. It usually settles within a few hours.

  4. Downtime? Minimal

Straight back to your day - just keep the area cool, wear SPF, and skip heat, sweat and sun for 24-48 hours.

Results

What to expect,
when.

Hair grows in cycles, and the laser only catches hairs in their active phase - so results build session by session.

  1. 1-2 weeks after each session

Treated hairs shed - they may look like they're growing before they fall out. Completely normal.

  2. Mid-course

Regrowth comes back noticeably finer, softer and patchier. Sessions are typically spaced 4-6 weeks apart for the face and 6-8 weeks for the body.

  3. End of your course

Most people need a course of around 6-8 sessions for significant, long-term hair reduction in the treated area.

  4. Longer term

Results are long-lasting, but hormones and time can wake dormant follicles - some people choose an occasional maintenance session.

Results vary from person to person - your likely outcome, number of sessions and spacing will be assessed honestly at your consultation.

Aftercare

Keep your skin happy.

Simple rules, big difference. We'll give you the full rundown on the day - here's the short version.

Do

  • Keep the area cool, clean and moisturised
  • Wear SPF 30+ daily on any treated area exposed to the sun
  • Shave between sessions if you need to - it leaves the follicle intact
  • Let any shedding hairs fall out on their own

Avoid

  • × Waxing, plucking or epilating between sessions - the laser needs the follicle
  • × Sunbathing, sunbeds and fake tan on the treated area, before and after sessions, as advised
  • × Hot baths, saunas, steam and hard workouts for 24-48 hours
  • × Harsh scrubs and active skincare on the area for a few days

Questions

Asked all
the time.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

The honest answer: it delivers long-term hair reduction rather than a guaranteed 100% forever. Treated follicles are significantly disrupted, so regrowth becomes much finer and sparser - many people see very little return. Hormonal changes can wake dormant follicles over time, which is why some clients book an occasional maintenance session.

Does it hurt?

It's more of a quick warm flick than pain - most people compare it to a small elastic band snap, over in a fraction of a second per pulse. Sensitive areas like the bikini line feel it a little more; legs and arms barely register. Your patch test lets you feel it for yourself before committing to anything.

Can I shave between sessions?

Yes - shaving is fine, and we'll actually ask you to shave the area 24 hours before each session. What you must avoid is waxing, plucking or epilating, because they remove the follicle the laser needs to target. Keep the root, lose the razor later.
